BUILDING HISTORY & INFORMATION

The 5,825 sq.ft. Federal House was built in 1824 by Thomas O. Hurlbut, who along with Charles Owen established the Owen and Hurlbut Paper Company. The paper mill, which is operating to this day, still bears the Hurlbut name.

Federal House remained in the Hurlbut family until 1960, although in later years it was a summer home for family members who resided in New York City. Since then, through various ownership's, this charming Federal-style brick home has been completely restored to the original country elegance of the Hurlbut Home.

Set deep on a broad lawn of beautifully landscaped grounds, the Federal House Inn is a lovingly restored, gracious southern plantation style historic home, framed by ancient copper beech trees and stately pines. The common areas are warm and inviting with soft music, comfortable furniture, antiques and fireplaces. Each guestroom has its own unique ambiance. All are bright and sunny with private baths and individually controlled air conditioning for the warm weather.

Nestled across from the winding Housatonic River at the base of Beartown State Forest, South Lee is a quaint little village listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Inn is one mile from picturesque Main Street Stockbridge and minutes from all area outdoor and cultural attractions including hiking, biking, skiing, antiquing, historic sites and museums.
